Helosciadium nodiflorum
Fool's watercress
Western and southern Europe, North Africa, and western Asia
Overview
Helosciadium nodiflorum is a creeping aquatic to marginal perennial of the carrot family, producing hollow, ridged stems 12-40 inches (30-100 cm) long that root at the lower nodes and form spreading mats in shallow water and wet mud. The leaves are pinnate, bright green, and divided into five to twelve pairs of oval, toothed leaflets 0.4-2 inches (1-5 cm) long, superficially resembling watercress. Small white flowers are borne in compound umbels of two to four rays, set opposite the leaves and either stalkless or on very short stalks, a feature that separates it from many related umbellifers. Flowering occurs through summer, followed by small ridged fruits about 0.1 inch (2-3 mm) long. It grows in ditches, slow streams, ponds, and marshy ground, rooting in mud and trailing into open water. The plant spreads vegetatively from rooting stems as well as by seed. One limitation is its strong dependence on permanently wet ground, where it can dominate small watercourses; it does not persist in dry soil.
Native Range
Helosciadium nodiflorum is native to western and southern Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. It grows throughout regions with mild, wet conditions and is widespread across the British Isles and the Mediterranean basin.Suggested Uses
Helosciadium nodiflorum is used in naturalistic pond margins, ditches, and wetland plantings where permanently wet ground is available. Its rooting stems stabilize muddy banks and shallow margins. It suits wildlife and bog gardens rather than conventional beds. How to Identify
