Goodenia mystrophylla
wild pansies
Overview
Goodenia mystrophylla is an erect to spreading herb or soft subshrub in the family Goodeniaceae, growing roughly 8-24 inches (20-60 cm) tall. The stems carry alternate leaves that are often toothed or lobed and clustered toward the base, with smaller leaves up the flowering stems. Through the warmer months it produces yellow flowers in the typical goodenia form, each about 0.4-0.8 inch (10-20 mm) long, with a short tube that splits into five spreading lobes arranged into a fan-like, two-lipped shape. The flowers are held in loose leafy clusters above the foliage and are followed by small capsules. Goodenia mystrophylla grows in open woodland, grassland, and disturbed ground in eastern Australia, often on seasonally moist soils, and behaves as a quick-growing, sometimes short-lived plant. It tolerates a range of soils but is sensitive to prolonged drought and to deep shade. The yellow flowers and low, leafy habit suit it to native ground-layer and meadow plantings.
Native Range
Goodenia mystrophylla is native to eastern Australia, where it grows in open woodland, grassland, and disturbed ground, often on seasonally moist soils.Suggested Uses
Used in native ground-layer plantings, meadow-style gardens, and seasonally moist borders. The low, leafy habit and long yellow flowering suit massed planting and gap-filling among other native herbs and grasses. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grow Goodenia mystrophylla in full sun to part shade on moist, free-draining soil. It establishes quickly and flowers over a long season, but it is sometimes short-lived and renews from self-sown seed. Water through dry spells, as it is sensitive to prolonged drought. It tolerates a range of soils where drainage is reasonable and the position is not deeply shaded. Light feeding in spring supports steady growth and flowering. Cutting back after the main flush can prompt a fresh round of flowers.Pruning
Cut back lightly after the main flowering flush to tidy the plant and encourage further flowers. Spent flowering stems can be removed through the season. Old growth can be cleared at the end of the season as the plant sets seed.Pruning Schedule
