Goodenia pinnatifida

Overview
Goodenia pinnatifida is a low perennial herb that grows from a deep rootstock into a flat rosette of leaves with upright flowering stems 4-12 inches (10-30 cm) tall. The basal leaves are 1.5-5 inches (4-13 cm) long and deeply lobed or pinnatifid, with rounded teeth, while stem leaves are smaller and narrower. Bright yellow fan-shaped flowers about 0.4-0.6 inch (10-15 mm) across are carried singly on slender stalks, each with five lobes spread to one side in the way typical of the family. Flowering runs through spring and into summer, with small ribbed seed capsules following. The plant grows in grassland, open woodland, and disturbed ground on clay and loam soils across southern and eastern Australia. It dies back to the rootstock in dry summers and reshoots from the crown after autumn rain. The low rosette and short flowering stems keep it close to the ground, so it gives a scattered rather than dense display in a planting. It tolerates grazing, mowing, and dry spells, which lets it persist on disturbed sites where taller plants do not persist.
Native Range
Goodenia pinnatifida is native to southern and eastern Australia, including South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. It grows in grassland, open woodland, and disturbed ground on clay and loam soils.Suggested Uses
Goodenia pinnatifida is used in native grassland plantings, low-water gardens, and revegetation of disturbed sites in southern Australia. Its low rosette suits the front of native beds and lawns managed for indigenous ground flora. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Goodenia pinnatifida grows in full sun to light shade on clay or loam soils and tolerates dry spells, grazing, and mowing once established. It grows from seed or by division of the rootstock and forms a deep root system that lets it resprout after dry summers. Plants need little water once established and can rot in wet, poorly drained ground. It withstands frost in USDA zones 8-10, dying back in dry or cold periods and reshooting from the crown. Growth is fast in the cool season and slows in summer heat.Pruning
Trimming spent flower stems keeps the rosette tidy and can prompt a second flush in a moist season. The plant reshoots from the crown after being cut or grazed. No other pruning is needed.Pruning Schedule
