Geijera parviflora
wilga
Overview
Geijera parviflora is an evergreen tree in the family Rutaceae, reaching 15-30 feet (4.5-9 m) tall and 12-20 feet (3.5-6 m) wide, with a dense, rounded crown and pendulous outer branches. The narrow, leathery leaves are 3-6 inches (8-15 cm) long and about 0.2-0.4 inch (5-10 mm) wide, drooping and aromatic when crushed. Bark is grey and finely fissured. Small cream to greenish flowers form in branched clusters at the branch tips, mainly in late winter and spring, followed by small rounded fruits about 0.2 inch (5 mm) across. The species is native to the semi-arid inland of eastern Australia, where it grows on clay and loam soils in open woodland and on plains. It withstands extended drought, heat, and moderate frost once established through a deep root system. The foliage is grazed by livestock and native animals during dry periods. In cultivation it forms a shade and shelter tree with a weeping outline; growth is slow, and several years are needed to develop the pendulous habit. Heavy clay that stays waterlogged causes root decline. The wood is hard and close-grained.
