Overview
Geijera spp. is a small genus of evergreen shrubs and trees in the citrus family, Rutaceae, with about six species native to Australia, New Caledonia, and New Guinea. The widely grown species, G. parviflora, forms a tree 15-30 feet (4.5-9 m) tall with a rounded crown and slender, drooping branches that give it the common name Australian willow or wilga. Leaves are narrow, leathery, and aromatic when crushed, 3-8 inches (8-20 cm) long, carried densely along the pendulous shoots. Small cream to greenish flowers appear in branched clusters from late winter into spring, followed by small rounded fruits about 0.2 inch (5 mm) across. The genus is adapted to hot, dry inland climates, with deep roots that draw on subsoil moisture, and the foliage is browsed by livestock and native animals during drought. Slow growth is a trade-off for this durability, and young plants establish gradually. Several species occupy semi-arid woodland and rocky ranges. The weeping form and dense canopy cast heavy shade beneath the tree.

Bloom Information
