Overview
Fissidens taxifolius is a small moss whose shoots resemble tiny fern or yew fronds, with leaves arranged in two opposite ranks along a flattened stem. Each leaf has a folded pocket-like flap (the vaginant lamina) at its base that partly clasps the leaf above, the feature behind the common name pocket-moss. Shoots are about 0.4-0.8 inch (1-2 cm) long, dull mid- to dark green, and form low, loose patches. It grows on bare, damp, often clayey soil on woodland floors, shaded banks, ditch sides, and path edges, favoring neutral to lime-rich ground. As a moss it has no roots, flowers, or vascular tissue, anchoring by hair-like rhizoids and taking up water over its surface, so it needs reliable moisture and shade. Reddish-brown spore capsules are raised on short stalks from the shoots, mainly in autumn and winter. It spreads by growth and fragments to colonize bare soil, where it can be one of the first mosses to appear. Its need for damp, shaded, bare ground limits it on dry or sunny sites.
Native Range
Fissidens taxifolius is widespread across Europe, North Africa, Asia, and North America. It grows on bare, moist, neutral to lime-rich soil in woodland, on shaded banks, and along paths and ditches. It is common in lowland areas with damp, disturbed ground.Suggested Uses
Grown or encouraged as ground cover on bare, shaded, moist soil in woodland and moss gardens and in humid terrariums. It quickly clothes clay banks, path edges, and disturbed soil. Its need for moisture and shade makes it unsuited to dry, sunny, or heavily planted sites. How to Identify

Bloom Information
This moss reproduces by spores rather than flowers. Reddish-brown spore capsules are raised on short stalks from the shoots, maturing mainly in autumn and winter. The capsules shed spores that disperse on air currents.

Care Guide
Fissidens taxifolius grows in shade to partial shade on bare, moist, neutral to lime-rich soil, including clay banks and woodland floors. It needs steady moisture and does not tolerate drought, deep drying, or strong sun. It is not grown from seed; patches or fragments are pressed onto suitable damp bare soil and kept moist while they establish. No feeding is needed, and heavy leaf litter or competition can smother it. It withstands cold and colonizes disturbed bare ground readily. It suits shaded soil beds, woodland gardens, and moss plantings or terrariums kept humid.Pruning
No pruning is required. Patches can be lifted and pressed back into place, and competing growth or smothering litter cleared away by hand.Container Growing
