Fissidens spp. is a very large genus of mosses, with several hundred species in the family Fissidentaceae found on every continent. Plants are small, from a few millimetres to about 2 inches (50 mm) tall, and grow on soil, rock, bark, and rotting wood, with some species living submerged in streams. The genus is recognised by its leaves, which are arranged in two flattened ranks along the stem and each carry a sheathing flap of tissue at the base, the so-called pocket that gives the common name pocket moss. As a moss, Fissidens spp. has no flowers, roots, or woody tissue; it anchors by slender rhizoids and reproduces by spores released from a small capsule raised on a stalk. The leaves stay green year-round where moisture allows, and plants can dry out and revive when wetted again. Colonies form low mats or tufts that spread slowly over their substrate. Because the plants are so small and depend on surface moisture, they are quickly affected by drying, pollution, and disturbance of their substrate. Many species are difficult to tell apart without a microscope.

Identify Fissidens spp. by the two-ranked, flattened arrangement of its leaves, each with a sheathing basal pocket that wraps the stem, a structure not seen in other common mosses. It needs no fertiliser and draws water and minerals directly through its leaves. Most species tolerate brief drying by becoming dormant and reviving when moisture returns, but prolonged drought kills them. In cultivation, terrarium and aquarium growers keep some species on hardscape in humid, low-light conditions. Air pollution and substrate disturbance reduce wild populations. Growth is slow, and mats take a long time to establish.

Pruning
