Overview
Erigenia bulbosa is a low spring-ephemeral perennial in the carrot family (Apiaceae), growing 2-9 inches (5-23 cm) tall from a small rounded tuber. It is among the earliest woodland wildflowers to bloom in eastern North America, often opening while snow still lingers. Each plant produces one or two finely divided, ternately compound leaves and a short stalk bearing a small compound umbel of white flowers. The flowers are small, about 0.1 inch (2-3 mm) wide, with white petals and dark reddish-brown to purple anthers, a contrast that gives rise to the regional name salt-and-pepper. After flowering, the plant sets small dry fruits and the foliage yellows and disappears by late spring, leaving the tuber dormant underground through summer, fall, and winter. E. bulbosa grows in rich, moist deciduous woodland, on floodplains, and along wooded slopes with deep leaf litter. Because it is dormant for most of the year and stands only a few inches tall, it is easily overlooked and does not persist in mowed or disturbed ground. Colonies build slowly from seed and tuber division, forming loose patches over many years.
Native Range
Native to eastern North America, from southern Ontario and New York west to Wisconsin and Kansas and south to Alabama and Mississippi. It occurs in rich, moist deciduous forests, floodplain woods, and shaded slopes over neutral to slightly acidic soils.Suggested Uses
Grown in native woodland and shade gardens as an early-season ground layer beneath deciduous trees. It suits naturalized plantings alongside other spring ephemerals such as Dicentra cucullaria and Sanguinaria canadensis. Early-emerging native bees and flies visit the flowers for pollen and nectar. How to Identify
