Overview
Erigenia is a genus in the carrot family, Apiaceae, represented by the single species E. bulbosa, known as harbinger of spring or pepper-and-salt. It is a small woodland perennial of eastern North America, growing from a rounded underground tuber to just 2 to 10 in (5 to 25 cm) tall. The leaves are divided into narrow segments and appear with the flowers in late winter and early spring. Tiny white flowers are carried in small flat clusters, each bloom bearing dark reddish-brown anthers that stand against the white petals, the contrast that gives the pepper-and-salt name. As a spring ephemeral, the plant completes its growth, flowers, and seeds within a few weeks before the woodland canopy closes, then dies back to the dormant tuber by late spring. Erigenia grows in rich, moist deciduous woodland and leaf litter, and is among the earliest native wildflowers to bloom in its range. Its small size and brief season mean it is rarely seen except by those looking for it on the late-winter forest floor.
Native Range
Native to eastern North America, from Ontario and the eastern United States south toward the Gulf states, growing in rich deciduous woodlands, wooded slopes, and floodplain forests.Suggested Uses
Erigenia is grown in woodland and native plant gardens for very early bloom, often alongside other spring ephemerals. The early flowers supply nectar to bees and flies active on mild late-winter days. It suits shaded, undisturbed ground where it can naturalise slowly over time. How to Identify
