Epigaea repens
trailing arbutus
Overview
Epigaea repens is a low, prostrate evergreen subshrub native to woodlands of eastern North America. Trailing stems 6-15 inches (15-38 cm) long spread along the ground, rooting at intervals and forming loose mats that rarely exceed 3 inches (8 cm) in height. The oval leaves are leathery, 1-3 inches (2.5-7.5 cm) long, with rusty hairs on the margins and undersides, holding their deep green color through winter. Clusters of tubular flowers open in early spring before most woodland plants, each bloom 0.5 inch (1.3 cm) across with five spreading lobes in white to pale pink. The flowers carry a spicy scent and are among the earliest nectar sources for emerging queen bumblebees. Fruit is a fleshy, whitish capsule that splits to expose seeds dispersed by ants. The species depends on specific soil fungi for root function, which makes transplanting from the wild rarely successful and accounts for its scarcity in cultivation. It grows in acidic, humus-rich soil under the shade of pines and oaks, and declines where soils are disturbed, limed, or compacted. Populations have dropped across parts of its range from habitat loss and collection, and it is legally protected in several states.
Native Range
Native to eastern North America from Newfoundland and Quebec south to Florida and west to the Great Lakes region and Kentucky. It grows in sandy or rocky acidic soils within pine and oak woodlands, often on slopes and along woodland edges.Suggested Uses
Used as a groundcover in woodland and native plant gardens, on shaded acidic banks, and among rhododendrons and other ericaceous shrubs. It suits naturalistic plantings where soil and shade conditions mirror its native pine-oak woodlands. How to Identify
