Dyschoriste nagchana
Overview
Dyschoriste nagchana is a small perennial herb or subshrub of the family Acanthaceae, reaching 8–24 inches (20–60 cm) tall and spreading 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) wide. The slender, branching stems are four-angled and carry opposite, simple leaves 1–2.5 inches (2.5–6 cm) long with entire to slightly toothed margins. Small tubular, two-lipped flowers about 0.4–0.6 inch (10–15 mm) long and pale blue to lavender or violet open in the leaf axils, often with darker lines in the throat. Flowering occurs mainly in the warm, wet season. The fruit is a small club-shaped capsule that splits open to eject its seeds, a trait shared across the family. Dyschoriste nagchana grows in grassland, open woodland, and disturbed ground in tropical and subtropical Asia. It grows quickly in warm, moist conditions but is frost-sensitive and short-lived where winter temperatures fall below freezing. Growth thins in deep shade and in soils that stay waterlogged.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grow Dyschoriste nagchana in full sun to part shade in moist, well-drained soil. It responds to warmth and regular moisture during the growing season and slows in cool weather. Frost kills exposed top growth, so it behaves as an annual or returns from the base in marginal climates. Light, free-draining soils suit it better than heavy, waterlogged ground. It can be raised from seed or soft-stem cuttings taken in the warm months. Regular trimming keeps the habit compact.Pruning
Trim lightly through the growing season to keep the habit dense and to remove spent flowering stems. Cut back hard in late winter or early spring where the plant is perennial. Frost-damaged growth can be removed as warmth returns.Container Growing
