Delosperma congestum 'Gold Nugget'
Gold Nugget Ice Plant
Cultivar of garden origin; the species {Delosperma congestum} is native to the highest elevations of the Drakensberg Mountains of Lesotho at over 9,000 ft (2,750 m), where it endures extreme cold, wind, and poor rocky soils; this alpine origin places the species among the more cold-hardy ice plants in cultivation, surviving to USDA zone 4 (-30°F / -29°C) in dry well-drained conditions; in wet winter soil cold tolerance decreases sharply and the succulent foliage rots
Overview
Delosperma congestum 'Gold Nugget' is among the more cold-hardy ice plants in cultivation, forming an extremely low succulent carpet just 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) tall and 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) wide. Bright yellow daisy-like flowers 1 inch (2.5 cm) across cover the tight mat in May and June. The species D. congestum is native to the highest elevations of the Drakensberg Mountains of Lesotho at over 9,000 ft (2,750 m), where it endures extreme cold, wind, and poor rocky soils — this alpine origin places the species among the hardier ice plants in cultivation, surviving to zone 4 (-30°F / -29°C) in dry well-drained conditions. Tiny bright green fleshy succulent leaves are densely packed along the trailing stems, creating a texture more like moss than a typical ground cover. The extremely low profile and slow growth rate produce a tight compact mat that fills crevices and covers rock surfaces. In wet winter soil, cold tolerance decreases and the succulent foliage rots; sharp drainage is the critical survival factor. The slow spread rate means patience is needed for the mat to fill an area — a 4-inch (10 cm) plug may take 2-3 years to cover 12 inches (30 cm). In hot humid climates, the species struggles with summer rot. Cool dry conditions produce the tightest growth.
Native Range
The species Delosperma congestum is native to the Drakensberg Mountains of Lesotho and South Africa, at elevations above 9,000 ft (2,750 m) on exposed rocky ridges and alpine meadows. 'Gold Nugget' is a selected form for bright yellow flowers.Suggested Uses
Used in alpine troughs, between flagstones, in rock crevices, and on the edges of raised alpine beds. The extremely low mat fills small spaces where even other ice plants would be too tall. Container culture works in shallow pots of 1 gallon (3.8 L) or more with gritty media. The zone 4 hardiness allows use in cold northern climates. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering occurs in May and June, approximately 4 weeks. Bright yellow daisy flowers cover the tight mat. The bloom period is shorter and more concentrated than some other Delosperma species. Flowers open in sun and close in shade.Detailed Descriptions

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Plant in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct light. Sharply drained lean sandy or rocky soil is essential. Avoid fertilizer. Water sparingly. Top-dress with pea gravel around the mat. Plant on slopes, in raised alpine beds, or in rock crevices for maximum drainage. Hardy to zone 4 in dry conditions. Clay or wet sites are unsuitable since the succulent foliage rots in waterlogged soil.Pruning
No pruning is needed. Remove any sections that die back from winter wet or summer rot.Maintenance Level
