Cruciata laevipes
crosswort
Overview
Cruciata laevipes, called crosswort, is a softly hairy rhizomatous perennial in the bedstraw family (Rubiaceae), forming loose, weakly upright to scrambling stems 6-24 inches (15-60 cm) tall. The square stems carry pale green, oval leaves in widely spaced whorls of four, each leaf with three main veins and a covering of soft hairs, the cross-shaped arrangement giving the plant its name. Small yellow flowers, faintly honey-scented, gather in tight clusters in the leaf axils from spring into early summer, ringing the stem at each node. It spreads underground by slender rhizomes, forming patches along hedge banks, grassy verges, woodland edges, and scrub on lime-rich to neutral soils. The growth is lax and tends to lean on surrounding vegetation rather than stand on its own. After flowering it sets small, smooth, blackening nutlets, then dies back to the rhizome over winter. In garden settings the spreading roots and sprawling habit can make it wander beyond its intended place. It tolerates a range of soils but grows poorly in deep shade or waterlogged ground.
Native Range
Native across much of Europe and into western Asia, where it grows on hedge banks, rough grassland, road verges, wood margins, and scrub, usually on calcareous or neutral soils. It is widespread in lowland and hill country through its range.Suggested Uses
Grown in wildflower meadows, hedge-bank plantings, and informal grassland where its spring clusters of yellow flowers suit naturalistic schemes. Used in pollinator and conservation plantings on lime-rich soils. Suited to wilder areas where the spreading rhizomes are less of a concern. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Yellow flower clusters open from April through June, set close around the stem at each leaf whorl. The faint honey scent draws small bees, flies, and beetles that pollinate the flowers. Seed sets soon after, and flowering stems fade as the plant moves toward summer dormancy.
