Corybas incurvus
slaty helmet-orchid
Overview
Corybas incurvus is a very small terrestrial orchid that grows from a tiny tuber and produces a single heart-shaped leaf, 0.4-1 inch (10-25 mm) wide, that lies flat against the ground. A single helmet-shaped flower sits almost stalkless on the leaf, about 0.4-0.6 inch (10-15 mm) long, in dark reddish-purple to near-blackish tones with translucent striping. The flower is formed mainly from a large hooded dorsal sepal arched over an incurved, fringed labellum, with thread-like lateral sepals. The whole plant stands only 0.5-1.5 inches (1.5-4 cm) high. It grows in moist, shaded forest and heath among leaf litter and moss across cooler parts of southern Australia, appearing in autumn and flowering through winter. Like other terrestrial orchids it depends on soil mycorrhizal fungi to germinate and grow, and the plant dies back to its tuber by late spring. Colonies build up slowly from offsets, often forming dense ground-level patches. The flowers are dull-coloured and sit at ground level, so the plant is easy to overlook and hard to grow outside its specialised fungal and moisture conditions.
Native Range
Corybas incurvus is native to south-eastern Australia, including Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and southern New South Wales. It grows in moist, shaded forest, woodland, and heath, often among leaf litter and moss.Suggested Uses
Corybas incurvus is grown by specialist native-orchid collectors in shallow pots and terraria, and features in the ground layer of moist, shaded native plant communities. It suits cool, damp, shaded positions in dedicated terrestrial-orchid culture rather than open garden beds. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering occurs through winter, roughly June to August in southern Australia, after the leaf appears in autumn. Each plant carries a single dark helmet-shaped flower held just above its flat leaf. The flowers are short-lived, and the plant dies back to its tuber by late spring.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Corybas incurvus grows in cool, shaded, consistently moist conditions among leaf litter and moss, and depends on soil mycorrhizal fungi that make it hard to cultivate away from its natural setting. In specialist collections it is grown in shallow pans of an open, humus-rich mix kept damp through the autumn-to-spring growing season and slightly drier during summer dormancy. It needs full to part shade and cool temperatures, and is intolerant of drying out while in growth. Tubers are small and easily lost if the mix overheats or stays waterlogged. Colonies increase from offset tubers over several seasons. Most growth and flowering happen in the coolest, wettest months.Pruning
Pruning does not apply to this ground-level terrestrial orchid. The single leaf is left to die back naturally so the tuber can store energy, and spent flowers are removed only if seed is not wanted.Container Growing
