Corybas diemenicus
veined helmet-orchid
Overview
Corybas diemenicus is a small, deciduous, tuberous terrestrial orchid in the family Orchidaceae, standing only about 0.8-2 inches (2-5 cm) high. Each plant produces a single rounded to heart-shaped leaf 0.4-1.2 inches (1-3 cm) across that lies flat against the ground, green above and often purple-tinged below. A single hooded flower sits at ground level just above the leaf, about 0.6-1 inch (1.5-2.5 cm) long, dark reddish-purple with translucent veining and a broad incurved upper sepal forming a helmet over a fringed lip. Flowering occurs in late autumn through winter. The plant grows from a small underground tuber, emerging with the autumn rains, flowering in the cooler months, and dying back to the tuber over the dry summer. Plants form colonies in moist leaf litter where conditions suit. The species needs cool, shaded, consistently moist conditions during growth and is intolerant of disturbance, drying, and direct sun. It is rarely cultivated and depends on specific soil fungi to grow.
Native Range
Native to south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, and southern New South Wales. Grows in moist eucalypt forest, fern gullies, and heath, in shaded leaf litter and moss over damp, humus-rich soils.Suggested Uses
Grown only by specialist native-orchid enthusiasts in shaded, moisture-retentive pots or terrariums with suitable soil fungi. In the wild it occurs as part of the forest-floor flora in bushland and conservation areas. It is not suited to general garden cultivation. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowers in late autumn through winter (May to August in its native range), with the single flower held just above the flat leaf. Emergence and flowering follow autumn rains and cool temperatures. Plants die back to the tuber by late spring as the soil dries.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in cool, shaded positions in consistently moist, humus-rich soil during the autumn-to-spring growing season. The species depends on specific soil fungi and is very difficult to establish or move, so wild colonies are left undisturbed. Moisture stays steady through growth, with the tuber kept drier during summer dormancy. Direct sun, drying, and soil disturbance kill plants quickly. Slugs and snails graze the soft leaves and flowers. Plants spread slowly into colonies where leaf litter and shade remain stable.Pruning
No pruning applies to this ground-level orchid. Dead leaves and spent flowers break down naturally in the leaf litter. Surrounding leaf litter and moss are left in place to maintain the moist, shaded conditions the plant needs.Container Growing
