Climacium americanum
American tree moss
Overview
Climacium americanum is a robust, dendroid moss that grows in the form of miniature trees, each upright stem 1.5-4 inches (4-10 cm) tall ending in a dense tuft of branches above a bare lower stalk. These tree-like shoots rise at intervals from a creeping underground stem, forming loose colonies rather than tight cushions. The small leaves are lance-shaped, toothed toward the tip, and turn from bright green to a duller olive or yellow-green as they age and dry. As a moss it has no flowers, true roots, or vascular tissue; it anchors by rhizoids and absorbs water directly over its surface. Reproduction is by spores, released from cylindrical capsules that form on separate stalks, and by fragmentation of the shoots. Native to eastern North America, it grows in consistently moist to wet habitats, including swamp margins, seeps, streambanks, wet forest floors, and the bases of trees. C. americanum needs steady moisture and shade and dries and shrivels in exposed or droughty sites, recovering when moisture returns. It is sensitive to disturbance and slow to recover where colonies are damaged.
Native Range
Native to eastern North America, from Canada south through the eastern United States. It grows in moist to wet, shaded habitats such as swamp edges, seeps, streambanks, wet woodland floors, and tree bases.Suggested Uses
Grown in shaded moss gardens, woodland and bog plantings, terrariums, and along the damp margins of ponds and streams, where its tree-like shoots add texture at ground level. It suits consistently moist, shaded spots that stay too wet for many plants. It also helps hold moisture and stabilize the surface of damp soil and rotting wood. How to Identify
Growing Conditions
Sun Requirements
Tolerates up to 3 hours of direct sunlight daily
• Full Sun: 6+ hours of direct sunlight
• Partial Shade: 3-6 hours of direct sunlight
• Full Shade: Less than 3 hours of direct sunlight
Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
C. americanum needs constant moisture, high humidity, and shade, matching its native wet woodland and streamside habitats. It grows on damp soil, humus, rotting wood, and the bases of trees, and it does not tolerate drying out for long, though it can revive after short dry spells. It has no roots and takes up water and nutrients across its whole surface, so clean, moist air and water suit it. In cultivation, as in moss gardens or terrariums, shade, regular misting, and undisturbed ground keep colonies healthy. It spreads slowly by creeping stems and spores and recovers slowly if trampled or stripped away.Pruning
Pruning does not apply to this moss. Colonies are left undisturbed, since the tree-like shoots and creeping stems are easily damaged and slow to regrow. Any clearing of leaf litter is done gently to avoid tearing the colony.Container Growing
