Overview
Chusquea spp. is a genus of more than 160 species of evergreen woody bamboos in the grass family, Poaceae, native to the mountains of Latin America from Mexico south to Chile and east into Brazil. Unlike most bamboos, Chusquea spp. species have solid rather than hollow culms, a key feature of the genus. Plants range from low, scrambling species under 3 ft (1 m) to robust clumping bamboos 10-20 ft (3-6 m) tall or taller, with slender, often arching culms and many small leaves. Each culm node carries multiple branch buds, so the stems break into dense tufts of leafy side branches, giving a feathery look. Most species are clump-forming and spread slowly rather than running, though some are climbers that lean on surrounding vegetation. C. culeou from Chile withstands cold to about USDA zone 7, while many tropical montane species are frost-tender. Chusquea spp. grows in cool, humid mountain forest in moist, well-drained soil and is intolerant of heat, drought, and waterlogging. Like other bamboos, the species are long-lived but flower only rarely, at intervals of many years, often dying after a mass flowering.
Native Range
Chusquea spp. is native to the Neotropics, ranging through the mountains of Latin America from Mexico and the Caribbean south along the Andes to southern Chile and Argentina, and into the highlands of Brazil. Species grow in cool, humid montane forest, on forest margins, and in clearings, from middle elevations to near the treeline.Suggested Uses
Chusquea spp. is grown as a specimen and screening bamboo in cool, moist gardens, in woodland edges, and in large containers in mild climates. The clumping species are used where a non-running bamboo is wanted for hedging or evergreen screening. Cut culms and foliage are used in crafts and arrangements. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Chusquea spp., like other bamboos, flowers only at long intervals of many years to decades, with whole populations sometimes blooming together. The grass-like flowers are wind-pollinated and not showy, and many species die after setting a heavy crop of seed. In most years plants are seen only in leaf, not in flower.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grow Chusquea spp. in cool, humid conditions in moist but well-drained, fertile soil in sun to partial shade, with shelter from drying wind. Plants suit cool-summer and maritime climates and struggle where summers are hot and dry, so the genus does well in mild, moist regions. Most species are clump-forming and spread slowly, so they need less containment than running bamboos. A mulched, evenly moist root zone matters, as drought stress browns the foliage and weakens the clump. Hardiness varies widely by species, from C. culeou at about USDA zone 7 to frost-tender tropical forms. Thinning old and weak culms at the base keeps clumps open and healthy.Pruning
Chusquea spp. needs only the removal of dead, weak, or crowded culms, cut at the base in spring to keep the clump open. Old culms are taken out as new ones replace them over the years. Heavy cutting is avoided, as the solid culms do not regrow once removed and the clump renews from the base.Container Growing
