Overview
Cheilanthes is a genus of small, drought-adapted ferns in the family Pteridaceae, known as lip ferns and found on dry, rocky ground across the warmer parts of the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Unlike most ferns, which need constant moisture, lip ferns grow in sun-baked rock crevices and survive long dry spells by curling their fronds. The finely divided fronds are 4-18 inches (10-45 cm) long, often beaded, hairy, or scaly, with the undersides frequently coated in white or rust-colored powder or dense hairs that reduce water loss. New fronds unfurl after rain from a short, scaly rootstock. Spore cases line the rolled-under frond margins, the feature behind the name lip ferns. Plants form small tufts rather than spreading colonies and decline in rich, wet soil, which causes the roots to rot. Their need for sharp drainage makes them better suited to rock gardens and crevice plantings than to general borders.
Native Range
Warm-temperate, arid, and semi-arid regions worldwide, with many species in the southwestern United States, Mexico, and southern Africa, where they grow on cliffs, rock outcrops, and stony slopes.Suggested Uses
Cheilanthes is grown in rock gardens, crevice gardens, troughs, and dry stone walls, and in alpine houses where wet winters would otherwise rot the roots. Its tolerance of heat and drought suits it to xeric and gravel plantings among rocks. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Ferns do not flower. Cheilanthes reproduces by spores borne in cases along the rolled-under frond margins, ripening mainly in summer and early autumn. Spores are released as dust and germinate in damp rock crevices, while established plants also spread slowly from their branching rootstock.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Cheilanthes grows in sharply drained, gritty or rocky soil in full sun to light shade, conditions that mimic its native rock crevices. Plants tolerate drought and heat once established and survive dry spells by curling their fronds, reviving after rain. Constant moisture and rich soil cause root and crown rot, so lean substrate and free drainage are key. The hairy or powdery frond coatings shed water, and overhead watering on still, humid days can encourage fungal spotting. Hardiness varies widely by species, from tender to frost-hardy.Pruning
Old, withered, or frost-damaged fronds are trimmed away in late winter before new growth unfurls. No other pruning is needed, and plants are slow to recover if cut back hard.Container Growing
