Overview

Chamaerops spp. is a genus in the palm family, Arecaceae, with the single species C. humilis, the European or Mediterranean fan palm, the only palm native to continental Europe. It is a slow-growing, clump-forming palm that usually reaches 6 to 15 feet (1.8 to 4.5 m) tall, occasionally taller with age, often producing several stems from the base to form a broad clump. Each stem is covered in old leaf bases and brown fibre and carries a crown of stiff, fan-shaped (palmate) leaves 1.5 to 3 feet (45 to 90 cm) wide, divided into many narrow segments, in green to silvery blue-green. The leaf stalks are armed with sharp spines along the edges. Plants are usually dioecious, with separate male and female individuals; small yellow flowers form in dense branched clusters among the leaves in spring, and female plants bear clusters of brown to orange, date-like fruits. The palm tolerates heat, drought, wind, and salt spray, and withstands more cold than most palms, surviving short spells near 10F (-12C). Growth is slow.

Native Range

Chamaerops humilis is native to the western Mediterranean, in Spain, Portugal, southern France, Italy, and northwest Africa including Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, where it grows on dry, rocky coastal hills and scrub.

Suggested Uses

Grown as a specimen and feature palm in Mediterranean, coastal, gravel, and courtyard gardens, and in large containers on terraces and indoors in bright light. Its clumping form and cold tolerance suit small gardens and cool-temperate areas where few palms survive. The spiny leaves make it usable as a barrier planting.

Care Guide

The European fan palm grows in full sun to part shade in free-draining soil of almost any type, from sand to clay, across a wide pH range. Once established it is drought-tolerant and needs little water, though occasional deep watering in summer speeds growth. It withstands coastal wind and salt and tolerates brief frosts to about 10F (-12C), making it usable in mild-temperate as well as Mediterranean gardens. Growth is slow, so plants stay in scale for years and suit containers. The spiny leaf stalks require caution during planting and cleanup. Old, dead fronds are removed to keep the clump tidy.

Pruning

Pruning is limited to removing dead or damaged fronds at the base in spring. Offshoots can be left to build a multi-stemmed clump or removed to train a single trunk and for propagation. Over-trimming green fronds weakens the palm.
