Overview

Chamaedorea cataractarum is the cat palm (cascade palm) — a dense clumping palm with cascading fronds, growing 36–72 inches (90–180 cm) tall and 36–60 inches (90–150 cm) wide. The species name 'cataractarum' means 'of waterfalls' — this palm grows naturally along Mexican stream banks and waterfalls, a clue to its moisture needs. Bright green pinnate fronds with wider leaflets than the parlor palm arch and cascade outward, creating a lush, full-bodied tropical presence. The clumping habit produces many stems from the base — denser and bushier than the single-stemmed parlor palm. Like the majesty palm, the cat palm requires consistently moist soil — the waterfall origin means it evolved in permanently wet conditions. Brown tips and yellowing fronds result from underwatering or low humidity. More light-demanding than the parlor palm — needs bright indirect light. NON-TOXIC to pets.

Native Range

Chamaedorea cataractarum is native to southern Mexico — stream banks and waterfalls.

Suggested Uses

Used as a lush, full-bodied indoor palm. Bright, humid rooms. Non-toxic for pet-safe homes. The denser, bushier alternative to parlor palm — but more moisture-demanding.

How to Identify

Identified by bright green cascading pinnate fronds on a dense multi-stemmed clumping palm. The dense, bushy, many-stemmed habit distinguishes this from the single-stemmed parlor palm. The wider leaflets and the cascading form are the cat palm signature.
