Calanthe triplicata
christmas orchid
Eastern Australia and the Indo-Pacific
Overview
Calanthe triplicata is an evergreen terrestrial orchid forming clumps of broad, pleated dark-green leaves 12-24 inches (30-60 cm) long that rise from short, fleshy pseudobulbs. From the center of each clump an upright flower spike reaches 24-40 inches (60-100 cm), carrying a dense head of many white flowers. Each bloom spans about 1-1.2 inches (2.5-3 cm), with a deeply three-lobed lip marked by a small orange or yellow callus, and the flowers often flush pink as they age. In eastern Australia the main display opens from late spring into summer, frequently around December, the origin of the common name Christmas orchid. The species ranges from the rainforests of Queensland and New South Wales across tropical Asia and the Pacific islands. It grows on shaded, humus-rich forest floors with steady moisture and deep leaf-litter cover. In gardens it needs deep shade, frost-free conditions, and consistently moist, free-draining soil, declining where light is harsh or the roots dry out. Clumps build slowly and can be divided after flowering to maintain vigor.
Native Range
Native to the rainforests of eastern Australia, from New South Wales through Queensland, and extending across Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands. It grows naturally on shaded, moist forest floors rich in leaf litter.Suggested Uses
Grown in shaded and woodland gardens, fern houses, and containers in frost-free areas, spaced 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart in groups. Suited to moist, sheltered positions beneath trees or on shaded patios. How to Identify

Bloom Information
The main flowering runs from late spring into summer, often peaking around December in eastern Australia. A single erect spike carries dozens of white flowers that open from the base upward over several weeks, fading to pink with age. Flowering depends on warmth and steady moisture through the growing season.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in deep to part shade on humus-rich, free-draining soil kept evenly moist through the warm months. The orchid is frost-tender and grows outdoors only in frost-free climates, or in pots moved under cover in winter. Watering is regular during active growth and reduced in the cooler months as growth slows. A mulch of leaf litter or bark mimics the natural forest floor and conserves moisture. Light feeding with a dilute balanced fertilizer during growth supports strong spikes. Clumps are lifted and divided after flowering once they become crowded.Pruning
Pruning is limited to removing spent flower spikes at the base once blooming ends and clearing dead or yellowed leaves. No other cutting is needed. Dividing crowded clumps after flowering keeps plants vigorous.Container Growing
