Bryoandersonia illecebra
spoon-leaved moss
Overview
Bryoandersonia illecebra is a pleurocarpous moss that forms glossy, yellow-green to golden mats of creeping, irregularly branched shoots across soil, leaf litter, rotting logs, and rock in shaded woodland. The shoots are julaceous, meaning the closely overlapping, concave leaves press tightly to the stem and give each branch a smooth, worm-like, rounded cross-section about 1-2 mm thick. Individual stems trail 1-4 inches (2.5-10 cm) and turn upward at the tips. The leaves are broadly oval and abruptly narrowed to a short point, a shape that suggests the common name spoon-leaved moss. Like other mosses it lacks true roots, flowers, and seeds, anchoring by thread-like rhizoids and reproducing by spores released from stalked capsules. Reddish-brown spore capsules on stalks 0.5-1 inch (12-25 mm) tall ripen in late autumn and winter, curved and slightly roughened. The species spreads slowly and depends on steady humidity and shade, drying to a duller, shrunken state in prolonged sun or drought before reviving when moisture returns. It is native to eastern North America.
Native Range
Native to eastern North America, where it grows in moist, shaded deciduous and mixed woodland on soil, humus, decaying logs, tree bases, and shaded rock.Suggested Uses
Grown in shade and woodland gardens, on moist banks, logs, and rock, and in moss gardens and terrariums. Used as a low green carpet between ferns and woodland wildflowers in damp shade. Its need for shade and moisture restricts its use in sunny, dry, or high-traffic areas. How to Identify

Bloom Information
This moss does not flower; it reproduces by spores. Reddish-brown spore capsules form on stalks 0.5-1 inch (12-25 mm) tall and ripen from late autumn through winter. Each curved capsule splits to release spores carried by wind and water.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Deep to partial shade and steady humidity suit this woodland moss, which grows on moist soil, humus, decaying wood, and shaded stone. It has no roots and draws moisture across its surface, so consistent dampness matters more than soil type or fertility. Slightly acidic conditions, roughly pH 5.0 to 6.5, match its native woodland substrate. Direct sun and dry air cause the mats to shrink and dull, though they revive after rain or misting. It spreads slowly and tolerates light foot traffic but not heavy wear. No fertilizer is needed.Pruning
No pruning is required for this low, mat-forming moss. Loose pieces can be pressed onto damp soil or wood to start new patches. Fallen tree leaves that settle on the mat can smother it and are cleared by hand.Container Growing
