Overview
Betonica spp. is a genus of perennial herbs in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to Europe, western Asia, and North Africa, and closely allied to Stachys spp., into which it has often been merged. The most familiar species, Betonica officinalis, called common betony or wood betony, forms a low basal rosette of oblong, scalloped, deeply veined leaves 2-5 inches (5-12 cm) long. From this rosette, upright square stems rise 12-24 inches (30-60 cm) to carry dense terminal spikes of two-lipped flowers in reddish-purple, magenta, or occasionally white. The genus grows in meadows, open woodland, heaths, and grassland on a range of soils. Flowering occurs through summer and is visited by bees and other long-tongued insects. Betonica spp. forms slowly expanding clumps and has a long history of use in European folk herbalism, though most species make a modest clump compared with larger border perennials. Plants tolerate poor soils and short drought once established but flower more freely with summer moisture and full sun.

Bloom Information
Flowering runs through summer, roughly June to August, with dense flower spikes held above the foliage. Bloom can extend into early autumn in cooler conditions. Removing spent spikes encourages a second flush.

Betonica spp. grows in full sun to partial shade on most well-drained soils, including poor and slightly acidic ground. Established plants tolerate short dry spells but flower more with steady summer moisture. The clumps spread slowly from a woody base and are easily divided in spring or autumn. Plants self-seed modestly in open ground. Few pests or diseases trouble the genus.Pruning
