Overview
Amyema miquelii is an evergreen aerial mistletoe native to eastern and southern Australia, living as a partial parasite on the branches of eucalypts, especially boxes and ironbarks, and sometimes wattles. Rather than rooting in the ground, it attaches to a host branch by a swollen union and draws water and minerals from it while making its own sugars. It forms a pendulous, clumped shrub roughly 1.5-6.5 feet (0.5-2 m) across, with drooping, narrow, grey-green leathery leaves that closely resemble the foliage of its eucalypt host. In summer and autumn it carries clusters of curved, tubular flowers in red, often tipped with green or yellow, grouped in threes and rich in nectar. Honeyeaters feed on and pollinate the flowers, and the small red to pink berries that follow are eaten by the mistletoebird, which spreads the sticky seeds to new branches. Heavy infestations can stress or kill individual host limbs, though the plant is a natural part of woodland ecology and supports many birds and insects. It cannot be grown in soil and depends entirely on a living host.
Native Range
Native to eastern and southern mainland Australia, across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. It grows in eucalypt woodland and open forest, on the branches of host trees rather than in the soil.Suggested Uses
Amyema miquelii features in woodland and habitat conservation rather than as a planted garden subject, because it supports honeyeaters, the mistletoebird, and several butterflies whose larvae feed on its leaves. In natural and revegetated woodland it adds nectar, fruit, and shelter through the year. It is studied as an example of host-parasite and bird-plant relationships. How to Identify
