Overview
Amblystegium serpens is a small creeping moss that forms thin, spreading green mats over soil, rotting wood, tree bases, stone, and brickwork. The slender stems are irregularly branched and creep flat against the surface, rooting down by rhizoids and weaving into loose wefts only a few millimetres deep. The leaves are tiny, 0.4-0.8 mm long, egg-shaped and narrowing to a slender point, with a single midrib reaching about halfway up the leaf. Spore capsules are raised on reddish stalks (setae) 8-20 mm (0.3-0.8 in) tall and are cylindrical, curved, and inclined, ripening brown. A near-cosmopolitan moss, it grows in sun or shade wherever surfaces stay damp and tolerates disturbed and built environments. It needs steady moisture and thins out on surfaces that bake dry for long periods. The mats are easily overlooked because of their small size.
Native Range
Amblystegium serpens occurs across the temperate and boreal Northern Hemisphere and on most other continents, making it nearly cosmopolitan. It grows on soil, bark, dead wood, rock, and masonry from lowlands to mountains, often in damp, shaded, or disturbed places.Suggested Uses
Used in moss gardens, on shaded walls, paving, and logs, and in terrariums where steady humidity is maintained. It colonises hard surfaces that few plants tolerate. Its need for constant moisture limits it to damp, sheltered settings. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Mosses do not flower. Amblystegium serpens reproduces by spores released from curved capsules that mature mainly in autumn and winter (September to February), though capsules can appear in other seasons where conditions stay moist. It also spreads vegetatively as fragments root and form new mats.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Amblystegium serpens grows in partial shade to full shade, and in sun where moisture is constant, on almost any damp surface including soil, wood, stone, and brick. It has no true roots and draws water over its whole surface, so it depends on humidity and frequent wetting rather than soil reserves. It tolerates a wide pH range, roughly 5.5 to 8.0, and accepts base-rich substrates. Established mats survive dry spells by drying out and reviving when rewetted. No feeding is required. It establishes from spores or transplanted fragments pressed onto a moist surface.Pruning
No pruning is needed. Mats can be lifted and re-pressed onto new surfaces to spread them. Fallen leaves are cleared to keep the mats exposed to light and moisture.Container Growing
