blue hibiscus
Overview
Alyogyne is a genus of about four or five species of evergreen shrubs in the mallow family (Malvaceae), native to the arid and semi-arid regions of southern and western Australia. Plants are fast-growing and open, reaching 3-8 feet (1-2.5 m) tall and nearly as wide, with lobed or deeply divided rough-textured leaves. The flowers resemble those of Hibiscus, to which the genus is closely related, but differ in having a single undivided style rather than a five-branched one. Each flower is broadly funnel-shaped, 3-5 inches (8-12 cm) across, in shades of mauve, lilac, purple, and blue, with white and pale yellow forms in cultivation; the blooms last only a day or two but open in long succession. Alyogyne grows in dry scrub and open woodland on sandy or gravelly soils and tolerates heat, drought, and wind once established. The genus is frost-tender and short-lived, often declining after five to ten years, and stems can be brittle and wind-damaged, the main limitations in the garden.
Native Range
Native to Australia, chiefly the arid and semi-arid zones of Western Australia and South Australia, extending into parts of the interior. Plants grow in dry scrub, mallee, and open woodland on sandy, gravelly, or rocky free-draining soils.Suggested Uses
Used as a fast flowering shrub in dry, sunny, and coastal gardens, in mixed shrub borders, and in xeriscape and Mediterranean-style plantings, spaced 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 m) apart. It also grows in large containers that can be moved under cover in cold-winter regions. The open habit suits informal screens and the flowers draw bees and other pollinators. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering is heaviest from late spring through summer and can continue into autumn in warm climates, with scattered blooms at other times. Each broad flower opens for only a day or two, but new buds follow over a long period. Bloom is most prolific in full sun and tapers in shade or cool weather.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Alyogyne are grown in full sun in light, sharply drained, sandy or gravelly soil of low to moderate fertility. They withstand heat, drought, and wind once established and need only occasional deep watering in dry spells; wet, heavy, or poorly drained soil leads to root rot. The genus is frost-tender, hardy in roughly USDA zones 9b-11, and is damaged or killed by hard frost. Light feeding and full sun keep flowering steady, while rich soil and overwatering give lush growth at the expense of bloom. Plants are short-lived and benefit from regular pruning to stay dense. Propagation is from semi-ripe cuttings or seed.Pruning
Plants are tip-pruned through the growing season and cut back by up to a third after the main flush, or in early spring, to keep them bushy and prolong their life. Hard pruning into old wood is risky and may not resprout. Removing frost-damaged stems in spring tidies the shrub.Container Growing
