Trailing
/TRAY-ling/🌱 Growth Habits● Basic
Also known as: cascading, draping, pendant
A growth habit where stems grow outward and downward rather than upright, draping over edges of containers, walls, or slopes. Trailing plants are distinct from true prostrate plants in that they do not necessarily root along their stems. They are essential for hanging baskets, window boxes, and cascading over retaining walls.
Etymology
Old French trailler (to tow), possibly from Latin tragulare
Example
“Trailing varieties of petunia cascade beautifully over the edges of hanging baskets.”
