Tendril

/TEN-dril/
🔬 Anatomy Basic

Also known as: cirrus

A modified leaf, leaflet, or stem that coils around objects to provide support for climbing plants. Tendrils exhibit thigmotropism — they grow toward and wrap around whatever they touch. They may be branched or unbranched and can coil in both directions. Grape tendrils are modified stems, while pea tendrils are modified leaflets. Some tendrils develop adhesive pads at their tips.

Etymology

Old French tendrillon (young shoot), from tendre (tender)

Example

The tendrils of sweet peas coil tightly around twine or netting, pulling the plant upward toward the light.
