    Stolonifer

    /stoh-LON-ih-fer/
    🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate

    Also known as: stolonifera, stoloniferum

An alternate adjectival form of stolonifera — both are used in botanical literature to denote the same stolon-producing habit. The -fer form is masculine. Appears as stolonifer (masculine), stolonifera (feminine), or stoloniferum (neuter).

    Etymology

From Latin stolon/stolonis (a runner, sucker) + ferre (to bear), meaning "bearing stolons." The alternate -fer ending is the masculine adjectival form.

    Example

Saxifraga stolonifera (mother of thousands) is one of the best-known stolonifer plants — producing long, thread-like runners that dangle and root at their tips, each forming a new rosette.
