Spine

A rigid, sharply pointed plant structure derived from a modified leaf, leaflet, or stipule, as distinct from a thorn (a modified stem) or a prickle (an outgrowth of the epidermis). Spines are common in arid-climate and browsing-pressured plants, where they deter herbivores and reduce water loss.
