Also known as: spadicea, spadiceum
A color epithet describing a deep, warm brown — specifically the rich brown of ripe dates or of the spathe of a palm. It is one of the more precise of the brown epithets in botanical Latin. Appears as spadiceus (masculine), spadicea (feminine), or spadiceum (neuter).
Etymology
From Latin spadix/spadicis (a palm branch, date-colored), from Greek spadix (a palm branch torn off with its fruit).
Example
“Carex spadicea and various brown-spiked sedges carry this epithet for the deep, warm brown of their mature seed heads — precisely the shade of a dried date.”
