A color epithet describing a deep, dull reddish-brown — the color of iron rust or oxidized iron. It is commonly applied to rusty-brown bark, fruit, or the undersides of leaves covered in rust-colored hairs. Appears as ferruginus (masculine), ferruginea (feminine), or ferruginum (neuter); also spelled ferrugineus.
Etymology
From Latin ferruginus, meaning "iron-rust-colored," from ferrugo/ferruginis (iron rust, dark red), from ferrum (iron).
