Also known as: ferrugina, ferruginum

A color epithet describing a deep, dull reddish-brown — the color of iron rust or oxidized iron. It is commonly applied to rusty-brown bark, fruit, or the undersides of leaves covered in rust-colored hairs. Appears as ferruginus (masculine), ferruginea (feminine), or ferruginum (neuter); also spelled ferrugineus.

Etymology

From Latin ferruginus, meaning "iron-rust-colored," from ferrugo/ferruginis (iron rust, dark red), from ferrum (iron).

Example

Rhododendron ferrugineum (alpenrose) has the characteristic rust-colored scales on its leaf undersides, and Quercus ferruginea (rusty oak) has bark and acorn cups covered in the same deep reddish-brown indumentum.
