    A colour epithet describing a deep, dark red the colour of blood, distinct from the brighter scarlet of coccineus, and the neuter form used where the genus is neuter. The colour may sit in the flowers, the young wood or the autumn leaves. Appears as sanguineus (masculine), sanguinea (feminine), or sanguineum (neuter).

    Etymology

    From Latin sanguis/sanguinis, meaning "blood."
