🏷️ Taxonomy●●● Advanced

Also known as: pontica, ponticum

A geographic epithet indicating the plant is native to Pontus — the ancient region along the southern and eastern shores of the Black Sea, corresponding broadly to northeastern Turkey and adjacent areas. Pontic plants often thrive in high-rainfall, cool maritime conditions. Appears as ponticus (masculine), pontica (feminine), or ponticum (neuter).

Etymology

From Latin Ponticus, meaning "of Pontus" or "of the Black Sea region," from Pontus (the Black Sea), from Greek Pontos (sea).

Example

Rhododendron ponticum — the invasive purple rhododendron of British woodlands — and Prunus laurocerasus var. pontica both carry this epithet for their origins along the forested Black Sea coast of Turkey.
