Pendulous

🌱 Growth Habits●● Intermediate

Also known as: weeping, drooping

Pendulous (or weeping) describes plants with branches that arc and hang downward, creating a cascading or umbrella-like form. This growth habit can be natural (weeping willow, weeping cherry) or the result of mutation and grafting. Pendulous trees are prized as specimen plants and focal points in landscape design. The weeping form results from a lack of normal geotropic response in branch growth.

Etymology

From Latin pendulus (hanging down), from pendere (to hang)

Example

The pendulous branches of the weeping willow swept the surface of the pond, creating a romantic garden scene.
