🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate

Also known as: olympica, olympicum

A mythological-geographic epithet honouring Mount Olympus — both the highest mountain in Greece (home of the gods in classical mythology) and several other mountains of the same name across the ancient Greek world. It was frequently applied by early botanists to particularly majestic, impressive, or high-altitude plants. Appears as olympicus (masculine), olympica (feminine), or olympicum (neuter).

Etymology

From Greek Olympikos, meaning "of Olympus," from Olympos — the sacred mountain home of the twelve Olympian gods.

Example

Verbascum olympicum (Olympic mullein) and Artemisia olympica are stately, impressive plants named for the mountain of the gods — their grandeur justifying the divine association their epithet invokes.
