Also known as: meridionale
A geographic epithet placing a plant in the southern part of a range or territory rather than naming a specific country. It is the direct counterpart of septentrionalis, and the two are often used within one genus to separate a northern species from a southern one. Appears as meridionalis (both genders).
Etymology
From Latin meridionalis, meaning "southern," from meridies (midday, south).
Example
“Luzula meridionalis (common wood-rush) carries the epithet in the form shared by masculine and feminine genera alike.”
