Lobatus
/loh-BAH-tus/🏷️ Taxonomy● Basic
Also known as: lobata, lobatum
A leaf shape epithet indicating the leaf is divided into lobes — rounded or finger-like projections separated by sinuses that do not cut all the way to the midrib. Lobed leaves occupy the middle ground between a simple entire leaf and a fully compound one. Appears as lobatus (masculine), lobata (feminine), or lobatum (neuter).
Etymology
From Latin lobus (a lobe, pod), from Greek lobos (a lobe, pod, earlobe).
Example
“Quercus lobata (valley oak) has the deeply lobed leaves characteristic of the white oak group, and Pelargonium lobatum has the palmately lobed foliage the epithet describes.”
