/lim-NOF-ih-lus/🏷️ Taxonomy●●● Advanced
Also known as: limnophila, limnophilum
A habitat epithet indicating the plant thrives in or beside lakes and ponds — standing or very slow-moving water, distinct from the flowing water of fluviatilis or rivularis. Lake-margin plants are adapted to seasonal water level fluctuations and still, often nutrient-rich water. Appears as limnophilus (masculine), limnophila (feminine), or limnophilum (neuter).
Etymology
From Greek limne (a lake, pool) + philos (loving, fond of), meaning "lake-loving."
Example
“Limnophila aquatica (water ambulia) and various pondweed species described as limnophila are classic still-water specialists, their growth adapted to the calm, mineral-rich conditions of lake margins.”
