    Leaching

    LEECH-ing
    🪨 Soil Types Basic

    Also known as: nutrient leaching

Leaching occurs when excess water carries soluble nutrients (especially nitrogen and potassium) below the root zone. Container plants are particularly vulnerable because frequent watering flushes nutrients faster than in-ground gardens—requiring 30–50% more fertilizer. Sandy soils with low CEC leach nutrients rapidly. Slow-release fertilizers, compost incorporation, and proper watering reduce nutrient loss.
