/HY-brid-um/🏷️ Taxonomy● Basic
Also known as: hybridus, hybrida
A taxonomic epithet marking a plant raised from a cross between two species, or occasionally between two genera, rather than one collected as a wild species. Garden names of this kind are conventionally written with a multiplication sign, as in Anemone x hybrida, to show the plant's crossed origin. Appears as hybridus (masculine), hybrida (feminine), or hybridum (neuter).
Etymology
From Latin hybrida, meaning "hybrid" or "mongrel."
Example
“Anemone x hybrida (Japanese anemone) and Cistus x hybridus (white rockrose) are both garden crosses rather than wild species.”
