Intermedius
/in-ter-MEH-dee-us/🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate
Also known as: intermedia, intermedium
A taxonomic epithet indicating the plant is intermediate in form or character between two other taxa — sharing features of both and sometimes suggesting hybrid origin. It is one of the most intellectually interesting of all epithets, acknowledging a transition state. Appears as intermedius (masculine), intermedia (feminine), or intermedium (neuter).
Etymology
From Latin intermedius, meaning "in between" or "intermediate," from inter- (between) + medius (middle).
Example
“Forsythia x intermedia (the most commonly grown garden forsythia) is a hybrid intermediate between two parent species, and Lonicera intermedia similarly occupies a botanical middle ground that its epithet acknowledges.”
