A geographic epithet indicating the plant is native to or most closely associated with Spain and the Iberian Peninsula (historically Hispania). Many of Europe's most sun-loving, drought-tolerant plants carry this epithet, reflecting the warm, dry climate of their homeland. Etymology

From Latin Hispanicus, meaning "of Hispania" (the Roman name for the Iberian Peninsula), from Hispania (Spain and Portugal).
