    A colour epithet describing a brilliant scarlet-red, brighter and more orange-leaning than the darker sanguineus, and the neuter form used where the genus is neuter. It is applied most often to flowers and to conspicuous berries. Appears as coccineus (masculine), coccinea (feminine), or coccineum (neuter).

    Etymology

    From Latin coccum, meaning "scarlet dye," from the kermes scale insects that yielded it.
