Ciliatus

/sil-ee-AH-tus/
🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate

Also known as: ciliata, ciliatum

A texture and margin epithet describing a leaf or petal margin fringed with fine, hair-like projections — cilia — like the lashes of an eyelid. The marginal hairs may be straight or curved. Appears as ciliatus (masculine), ciliata (feminine), or ciliatum (neuter).

Etymology

From Latin ciliatus, meaning "furnished with cilia" or "fringed with hairs," from cilium (an eyelid, eyelash).

Example

Viola ciliata and Penstemon ciliatus both have the characteristic fringe of fine marginal hairs along their leaves or petals — a detail visible only on close examination but diagnostic for the species.
