Also known as: canadense
A geographic epithet indicating a plant native to Canada or broadly to northeastern North America. In early botany, "Canada" was loosely applied to much of northeastern North America, so plants named canadensis may have native ranges extending well into the United States.
Etymology
From New Latin Canadensis, from Canada, itself from the Iroquoian word "kanata" (village, settlement).
Example
“Tsuga canadensis (eastern hemlock), Aquilegia canadensis (red columbine), and Amelanchier canadensis (shadbush) are all beloved North American natives bearing this epithet.”
