    Also known as: arctica, arcticum

A geographic epithet placing a plant in the Arctic, the far northern zone around the pole. Species carrying it endure a very short growing season and a long, hard winter, and are often low, compact and quick to flower once the ground thaws. It shades into borealis, which covers northern latitudes broadly. Appears as arcticus (masculine), arctica (feminine), or arcticum (neuter).

    Etymology

From Latin arcticus, "arctic, northern", a word tied to the constellation of the Bear that marks the northern sky.
