Overview

Uvularia perfoliata is perfoliate bellwort (merrybells) — a graceful native woodland wildflower growing 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) tall and wide. The species name 'perfoliata' means 'through the leaf', describing the characteristic perfoliate leaves — the stem appears to pass directly through the center of each leaf, as if the leaf were threaded onto the stem. This is a botanical trait uncommon in temperate perennials and makes identification straightforward. Soft lemon-yellow pendulous bell-shaped flowers with slightly twisted petals dangle from the tips of gracefully arching stems in April and May, creating a nodding, shy appearance. The genus name Uvularia comes from 'uvula' (the pendulous tissue in the throat), referencing the dangling flowers. Gray-green to blue-green foliage persists through summer — not a spring ephemeral like trilliums, the foliage remains until fall. Spreads slowly by rhizomes to form a colony over time. Moist, humus-rich, acidic deciduous woodland soil. Deer avoid the foliage.

Native Range

Uvularia perfoliata is native to eastern North America — from Quebec south to Florida and west to Texas, growing in rich deciduous forests.

Suggested Uses

Used in woodland gardens, shade gardens, and naturalized under deciduous trees. A graceful native with an arching habit. The perfoliate leaves are a botanical conversation piece. Unlike trilliums, the foliage persists through summer.

How to Identify

Identified by soft lemon-yellow pendulous bell-shaped flowers with twisted petals on arching stems, and gray-green perfoliate leaves (stem appearing to pass through the leaf center). The perfoliate leaf is the key diagnostic — checking whether the stem pierces the leaf base confirms identification. The dangling yellow bell flowers and the arching habit confirm Uvularia.
