Overview
Scorzoneroides spp. is a genus of perennial herbs in the daisy family (Asteraceae), separated from Leontodon spp., with around 30 species across Europe, Asia, North Africa, and the Americas. Plants form a low basal rosette of narrow, lobed or toothed leaves 2-8 inches (5-20 cm) long and send up leafless or near-leafless stalks 6-24 inches (15-60 cm) tall. Each stalk carries one or a few yellow flower heads 0.5-1.5 inches (1.5-4 cm) across, made up entirely of strap-shaped ray florets, resembling a dandelion. S. autumnalis, autumn hawkbit, flowers from midsummer into autumn in grassland and meadows. The seeds bear a feathery parachute and are wind-dispersed, and plants self-sow freely into open ground. Foliage dies back in winter in colder regions. Plants grow in open, sunny grassland and tolerate mowing and grazing.
Native Range
Native to Europe, temperate Asia, North Africa, and parts of the Americas, with several species widespread in European grasslands. S. autumnalis occurs in meadows, pastures, lawns, roadsides, and waste ground, and is naturalized in North America.Suggested Uses
Grown in wildflower meadows, naturalistic grassland, and pollinator plantings, where the yellow heads draw bees and other insects. Plants establish from seed sown in autumn or spring. The free self-seeding makes them unsuited to formal borders and tidy lawns.How to Identify
