Overview
Schistidium crassipilum is a small, cushion-forming moss of hard, lime-rich surfaces, building compact tufts and patches usually 0.2-0.8 inch (5-20 mm) tall. The narrow leaves are dark green to blackish-green and tipped with a stout, toothed, whitish hair-point that gives established cushions a hoary, grey-frosted look when dry. The leaves curl and twist inward as they dry and spread again when wetted. Reproductive capsules are short and barrel-shaped, sitting immersed among the upper leaves rather than raised on long stalks, releasing spores in late winter and spring. It grows on calcareous and base-rich stone, including natural limestone, mortared walls, concrete, headstones, and other man-made surfaces, and is common in towns and cities. The moss tolerates drought, heat, and full exposure on bare rock, drying to a dark crust and reviving quickly after rain. It does not grow on acidic rock or in deep shade, and it spreads slowly to form expanding cushions and crusts. As a non-vascular plant it has no roots, flowers, or true conducting tissue, anchoring by slender rhizoids and taking up water over its whole surface. It forms part of the moss communities that colonise old walls and stonework.
Native Range
Schistidium crassipilum is widespread across Europe on lime-rich rock and stonework, and occurs in parts of western Asia and North Africa. It is common on natural limestone and on walls, mortar, and concrete in both rural and urban settings.Suggested Uses
Grown or encouraged on limestone walls, rock gardens, tufa, troughs, and stonework for a green-grey, frosted moss cover. Suits naturalistic and low-maintenance stone features and wall plantings on lime-rich substrate. It also helps weather new concrete and mortar into an aged look. How to Identify

Bloom Information
As a moss, Schistidium crassipilum does not flower and instead reproduces by spores. Capsules mature and release spores mainly in late winter and spring. The immersed capsules show only on close inspection among the leaf tips.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grow on hard, lime-rich surfaces such as limestone, mortar, concrete, or tufa in full sun to light shade; it will not establish on acidic stone or in deep shade. No soil, feeding, or routine watering is needed, as the moss takes up moisture directly from rain and dew and tolerates long dry spells. Biocide treatment and pressure washing strip the cushions, so colonies persist only on undisturbed surfaces. It establishes where spores land on suitable stone, or by pressing fragments onto damp, lime-rich surfaces. The moss endures hard frost and summer heat on exposed rock. Stable, undisturbed stonework supports long-lived colonies.Pruning
No pruning applies to this moss, which has no stems or woody growth. Remove competing weeds, leaf litter, or coarser mosses that would smother the cushions. Leave the colony undisturbed, as scraping or washing destroys it.Container Growing
